Basics of Seven Card Stud Hi Lo Poker

Nobody has to qualify on the “high” side. Whoever has the winning hand wins half the pot automatically and could win the entire pot. To win the “low” side, you have to qualify. To qualify for low, it takes a five card hand with numerical values from Ace through eight. Ace is the lowest value to qualify for the “low” half of the pot. The best low hand is A,2,3,4,5. This hand has been nicknamed the “wheel” or “bicycle”. The prevailing “low” hand will be the one that emerges with the lowest card displayed. If there is a tie, the second lowest high card would be the winning hand.

Seven Card Stud Hi Lo Poker: Facts to Remember

  • You can use any combo of cards for the “low” hand or the “high” hand or you can use the same cards for both sides.
  • Straights and flushes won’t count against you on the “low” side.
  • When a player “scoops” a pot, they win the entire pot.
  • When there are leftover odd chips, they go to the “high hand”. If players tie for the “high” side of the pot and there is an odd chip, the chip will be given to the player holding the highest hand. The same is true in reverse for the low hand.
