Poker Slang

He caught his winning card on the river! Both players bet before the turn. I
got a boat, which beats your flush and your straight so I win all the antes
plus every bet that everyone else made. Huh? What? If you are confused as to
what any of those statements above mean, then you are probably not very
familiar with poker slang. Oh yes, just as poker has churned out its own large
cult following, the poker culture has its own poker slang that players
understand and abide by. For instance, the number two is not a word within the
world of poker, but rather, 2's are known as deuces. Similarly, 3's are known
as "treys." The poker slang involved with a poker game is enough to make
non-players crazy!

Here are some examples of different forms of poker slang:
-
Full House - Three of any kind of one card (for instance, 3 10's) plus a pair
of another card. A full house is often referred to as the "boat" as well.
-
Flush - Five cards all with the same suit in poker slang
-
Straight - Any five cards that go in order, like 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
-
River - In Texas Hold 'Em poker slang, the "river" is the fifth card dealt out
in the community cards. Called the "river" because a player who catches a
winning card as a result of this card is said to have been fishing for a
winner.

These are just several examples of poker slang that you might hear should you
be gathered around a poker table anytime soon. Generally, poker is a game that
revolves around trickery and deceit so new words are always originating to keep
the players in the game and alert while keeping outsiders in the dark as to
what the conversations mean. Poker slang achieves this goal and allows poker
players to understand the slang of the game, while outsiders may struggle to
know the difference between the "boat" and the "river".
